YourMondayMotivator: You need a notebook

By | Inspiration, MondayMotivator | No Comments

Do you know when inspiration is going to hit you %%First Name%%? I’m asking because I don’t. It comes of out of nowhere like a flash of lightning and then it’s gone.

Inspiration is when you wake up inspired from the stupor of everyday Life and have a “brilliant idea”.

Those moments can be few or far between so you have to capture them quickly on whatever you have handy. Because stuff, things to do, quickly get in the way. Mundane things can take priority over getting ideas written down. That’s a waste and can be depressing. You get the feeling you missed out on something – a different life perhaps.

These aren’t just the normal “Oh that’s right I need to do this ..”. I’m talking about the ideas that fire your imagination and give you a sudden boost of energy.

You’ve felt that right? That massive boost when from out of the depths of your imagination comes an idea that inspires you.

I like those moments. They literally seem to embody the meaning of the word “inspire”.

If you like those moments you need something handy to capture them on so you can come back to them. Those moments, or ideas, will always give you a boost even you don’t action them. Just the reading of them can be enough to put a spring in your step or a smile on your face because they are yours. They came from you.

This week work out what you will keep handy to capture those moments. Be it a notebook, phone, or scraps of paper and keep them handy. Because if you don’t it’s gone. That’s annoying.

Have a great week.

YourMondayMotivator: What’s in a name?

By | Inspiration, MondayMotivator | No Comments

What’s in a name? A lot when you’re trying to name a child.

That’s right baby number two graced us with his presence on Saturday afternoon. And it’s a boy. So we now have” the set” as people keep telling us. Not sure about that saying considering they are human and not salt and pepper grinders.

So Lachlan Gray Thatcher-Edley is now here and I’m a bit busy to write any more than a short note to say have a great week and babies are very cool.

See you next week.

YourMondayMotivator: Information OVERLOAD!

By | Inspiration | No Comments

I devour information every day, literally, and for some time I have been asking myself why. Why am I so interested in reading about … everything. I am even getting upset when I don’t have time to read / watch everything I want too. Argh!

It’s like I’m an information addict and my addiction is being well fed by the ever expanding internet of stuff. And it’s not all good stuff. More and more it’s regurgitated, uninformed, under investigated fluff.

Information Overload

So why my sudden realisation I’m addicted to information? Because I’m paying for my addiction with time.

Reading / watching online entertainment, portrayed as news / portrayed as information, takes up valuable time. Time I never get back. I wasn’t reading as many books. They were taking longer to read because I’m consuming information online.

So do I need to read / watch this interesting stuff?

Do I retain information obtained online as much as I do when I read a book?

Is it as relaxing as reading a book?

These are the questions I’ve been asking myself because these days what purpose is that information serving apart from being a vehicle to put advertisements in front of me. …

Think about your online habits this week %%First Name%% and ask yourself, “Do I need to read / watch this?”. That question is slowly breaking my habit and I am getting back the time I need to do the things that are really important to my self and my growth.

When I first typed the headline for this piece I typed ‘information overlord’. That could be nearer the truth.

Have a great week.

YourMondayMotivator: We’re back. Well some of us.

By | Inspiration, MondayMotivator | No Comments

Last week I wrote about 2014 being the best year of your Life because … How’s your thoughts about that progressing?

I’ve amended my list a few times over the last week as I thought some more about the year ahead and more importantly did some budgets. Both money and time budgets.

Keep in mind there is a balance between not doing enough to feel you have achieved and having such a big list it actually demotivates you because it’s just so BIG. For the ones that are really big but need to be done I am breaking them down into quarterly goals. That has made them seem a lot easier to achieve.

Right now I’m reading, and really enjoying, Walter Isaacson’s biography of Benjamin Franklin. An amazing man that in my mind shows that modern man does little with his life. Modern man may be good at one or two things in his lifetime but Benjamin Franklin and others of his ilk were excellent in several vocations.

In my opinion we have taken retirement too literally and stop being useful when we do. When you stop being useful and contributing surely you run out of Purpose and slowly fade away. Why would you do that?

What I like about Benjamin Franklin was he was constantly trying to improve himself and lead a “virtuous life”. It’s something I like to think I’m working on too.

The following are the 13 virtues he tried to improve upon every day and every week for most of his life. I thought it might be useful to give you some ideas to help make 2014 the best year of your Life.

  1. Temperance: Eat not to dullness and drink not to elevation.
  2. Silence: Speak not but what may benefit others or yourself. Avoid trifling conversation.
  3. Order: Let all your things have their places. Let each part of your business have its time.
  4. Resolution: Resolve to perform what you ought. Perform without fail what you resolve.
  5. Frugality: Make no expense but to do good to others or yourself: i.e. Waste nothing.
  6. Industry: Lose no time. Be always employed in something useful. Cut off all unnecessary actions.
  7. Sincerity: Use no hurtful deceit. Think innocently and justly; and, if you speak, speak accordingly.
  8. Justice: Wrong none, by doing injuries or omitting the benefits that are your duty.
  9. Moderation: Avoid extremes. Forebear resenting injuries so much as you think they deserve.
  10. Cleanliness: Tolerate no uncleanness in body, clothes or habitation.
  11. Chastity: Rarely use venery but for health or offspring; Never to dullness, weakness, or the injury of your own or another’s peace or reputation.
  12. Tranquility: Be not disturbed at trifles, or at accidents common or unavoidable.
  13. Humility: Imitate Jesus and Socrates

If you are one of those back at work today have a great day and a successful week. If you’re still on holiday go for a walk this morning, look up, take some big breaths, relax and keep a note book handy for all the important thoughts you will have.
